United States. A clash of interests between the 
agrarian South and the industrial North was 
enormously stepped up by the railway train. It was a 
railway war. It was also fought by rail, the first war 
in human history fought by rail, and it made it much 
worse than any previous war. It could move more 
people, more material, more ammunition.
